Two weeks after Angelina Jolie went public with her decision to undergo a double mastectomy, the actress has lost her aunt to breast cancer.
The Oscar winner's uncle, Ron Martin, broke the sad news today to E! News, saying his wife (the younger sibling of Jolie's mother) passed away early this morning.
"Angelina has been in touch throughout the week and her brother Jamie has been with us, giving his support day by day," Martin said. "They both loved Debbie very much and although Angie is not able to come right now she has sent her love and support which was very nice."
Jolie's mother died of ovarian cancer in 2007 and the actress will soon have her ovaries removed to take away the risk of falling to the same disease.
Debbie passed away at Palomar Hospital in Escondido, California and is survived by her two sons and Ron, who added in his statement:
"We have seen Angelina a number of times since Debbie was diagnosed with breast cancer and Debbie and I were both very proud of her recent decision to have the double mastectomy and to do everything she can to keep her family from having to go through what we've been through."
