Mother of Flushed Newborn in China Speaks Out, Says She Tried to Save Baby

We have an update on the incredible story out of China this week, in which a newborn baby was found in a sewage pipe after being flushed down the toilet by his mother.

That mother has not yet been named, but she has spoken out.

And according to The Associated Press, the woman is a 22-year old who was actually present throughout the rescue of her child, although she did not reveal her identity to workers as they cut her son free.

The woman told law enforcement that she had no intention of killing her child.

She simply could not afford an abortion and secretly delivered on Saturday while on the toilet.

She attempted to catch the baby, but claims he slipped through the sewer line and the mother immediately alerted her landlord to the situation.

Zhezhong News said the mother is a high school graduate and works at a restaurant in the Zhejiang province city of Jinhua.

This same report says the woman got pregnant via a one-night stand and the father never took responsibility. She never admitted the pregnancy to her parents and hoped to raise the child alone, despite a lack of funds and resources.

It's unclear what will now happen to the baby, who fractured his skull in the incident and who weighs 6 pounds, 2 ounces. He has a low heart rate, but is expected to make a full recovery.
